News Update (last updated 11/7/01) Team up!

  • Mad Beanz! Issue #0
Believe it or not but the first printed edition of Mad Beanz! is set for distribution! After five years of preparation and planning, the wait is over! The book will be unveiled through national distribution June 2002. Why the long wait? Well, Mad Beanz creator DKN just wanted to make the best possible book and that takes time! In addition the last few years were spent carefully constructing the initial fifteen-issue story arch and putting the finishing touches on the first ten issues.

This first special issue features an exciting crossover story with Ninja High School entitled "Living la Viva Taco." It features one of the coolest NHS characters ever- Doggie! (BTW, All Ninja High School characters and logos are copyright Antarctic Press 2001!)

  • Site Relaunch!
Yes, 2002 will be the year of the bean! The revamped MadBeanz.com site is in the works! (Hopefully my next update will say "The site is complete!") The new site will is designed to give people more reasons to come back again and again: weekly news updates, exclusive online comic books, updates on our 'How to Draw' series and an animated Mad Beanz! Flash webisode every month! Yes, you heard right! But I'll repeat it anyway. Leading up to the release date of the Mad Beanz comic book this June, www.MadBeanz.com will be updated with a new webisode each month. Each episode features some of the best voice talent in LA. You can trust me on that because I sat in on like 50 auditions before DKN found the right voice talent. Anyway, it's going to be much more than cool! It's going to be kewl!!!
  • Advertise
Yes, we will be selling ads in our book. To be quite honest, raising the funds for publicity and printing is a bit more than we can easily bankroll without the support of advertisers. HOWEVER- advertising in Mad Beanz! is strictly limited to a few select businesses that provide important services to our readers. Potential advertisers will only be contacted because we, ourselves, enjoy their products or feel our readers will. The businesses benefit by expanding into an exclusive niche market and we benefit by raising funds to print our book. Ads are very inexpensive. So if you are interested in having an advertisement or announcement printed in our book contact us. Also if you want to trade ads let us know. We will send you our ad kit. And for you readers, trust us- these ads will not be terribly obtrusive. In fact we are doing them in a whole new way !!
  • American Film Institute Screening
Saturday Afternoon At the Movies was a event hosted by Smorgasbord Productions and the LA Actors Coalition at the American Film Institute's Mark Goodson Theater. The only problem was that we had so many great short films the event ran a bit long. Invited guests included members of Slamdance, Sundance, the Hollywood Short Film Festival and Film Threat. A great time was had by all- except for Phil Zlotorynski who, I'm sorry to say, committed an indecent act. We'll try to win even him over with our next event. If possible, we plan to host additional film screenings in the future.

Comics

  • Mad Beanz!
Everybody is hard at work on this comic. DKN is just a total perfectionist when it comes to this book. He won't let go of any of the pages until they are perfect. In fact, he keeps going back to redraw earlier pages. If you're a comic creator who has worked on a book for a number of issues, I'm sure you're familiar with this phenomenon. You might do ten issues of a book. By the time you finish the last book you look back at the first book and realize you need to redraw it. Your style has improved and you just know you can do a better job with it. Anyway, I'm trying to discourage too much of this but hey...
HELP WANTED: We're up to like issue ten with the pencils. Still need INKERS! We are also hoping to recruit an additional penciler and cover artist. Will need colorists soon as well.

  • Samurai Hoe-down Feature Film
The fifth draft on the feature film script is now complete. This script took too long to finish. Doubt its something our production company could ever make due to all the stunts, special FX, etc. I suppose we could turn it into a B movie if we got desperate and make it really cheesy. Hmmm, would Troma be interested?
  • Mad Beanz! Flash Animation
Currently working on the Flash animation for the first Mad Beanz webisode for www.madbeanz.com. All the storyboards and principal test animation is complete. Most of the voice actors have been chosen. DKN is still searching for a few more key voices so it looks like auditions for voice actors will continue resume next week. Recording sessions will probably take place the end of the month. The only slight snag is that our Flash animator seems a bit tied up with several other projects at the moment. Could probably use some help. ANY FLASH ANIMATORS OUT THERE WANT TO HELP??
  • Mad Beanz! Animated TV Pilot
The television pilot episode for the series has long been complete along with all the storyboards. I don't think we'll actually be making the episode though now that we are so busy with the flash animation webisodes. It's on the back burner now.
  • Animated Trailer
We spent the last month hard at work on a short animated policy trailer for movie theaters. It's going to be our demo piece for clients. It was the first time we put our hardware and software to the test of creating 2-D animation. We went through the entire process- from script to storyboards, to recording voice actors, to composing music, to rough animation, to clean-up animation, to cel painting, to final output. whew! It's a lot of work! But we can do it! And to prove it here is a very short clip:
  • Other Random Production News
Our very own Daron McFarland is a contestant on Street Smarts. He came into some serious $$! If the episode ever airs be sure to watch for the part where he slams his head into the buzzer. That move gave him one very bloody scar which the make-up artists on the show desperately tried to cover.
